U.S. Navy Series Car # 8 bears the silhouette of the V4 Argonaut Class Submarine - the USS Argonaut SS 166.  She was built by the Portsmouth Naval Shipyards in Kittery, Maine, then launched at the Portsmouth Naval Yards on November 10, 1927 and commissioned on April 2, 1928.  The V4 Class Submarines were the largest non-nuclear submarines made by the USA.  Designed as a mine layer, however she was quickly converted to a Troop Carrier Submarine as her sea trials proved that she was not able to perform to the design criteria.  Undersized Engines failed to produce the power specified which ultimately affected speed and diving capabilities required in a combat submarine.  WIth a length of 358 feet by a beam width of 34 feet, they presented an excellent slow target for enemy vessels.  On January 10, 1943 the Argonaut spotted five Japanese Freighters  with their Destroyer Escort returning to Rabaul from Lae.  By chance an Army Bomber was overhead and witnessed Argonaut's attack on the convoy.  After sinking one Japanese Destroyer with torpedoes the remaining escort destroyers immediately closed for combat and according to the bomber crew the Argonaut was brought to the surface with depth charge damage and pounded until she slipped under the waves never to be heard of again.  Based on the bomber crews report, the USS Argonaut was credited with sinking a Japanese Destroyer.  Her name was struck from the Naval List on February 26, 1943.
